Frederick Hirt Family Tree

Frederick Franklin (Frank) Hirt, the fifth child of Casper and Fannie Hirt was born on the family homestead in Riley Township, Sandusky County on State Route 412. October 13, 1884 he married Teckla Louise Gross at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fremont, Ohio. This marriage of 59 and 1/2 years was blessed with nine children: John, Fannie, Chester, Clarence, Harold, Lester, Pearl and twins, Mabel and Milan.

Frederick Franklin was prominent for many years in the Democratic Party in Sandusky County. He served as County Commissioner for two terms. He was chairman of the commissioners when ground was broken in 1935 for the addition to the Sandusky County Courthouse. His name appears on a plaque in the lower corridor, north end of the courthouse. In addition to farming, Frank engaged in wholesale butchering for approximately 15 years.

Helen Hiebel described Frank as a short, wiry little fellow, witty, liked a good time, liked to tease and enjoyed people. He liked to dance and being short could do the "Grasshopper Jig" the best of anyone. He was easier going than his brothers, but the brothers all stuck together. Frank and Lucy's homewas always hospitable and warm; all were welcome to drift in for a meal prepared by Aunt Lucy, a wonderful cook. There were many fond memories at the big red brick home with large porch. Christmas Eve was usually spent with an oyster stew meal, and later everyone joined in a sing-a-long. Grandma's baked bread and coffeecakes were out of this world, as were her sugar cookies. Arrowheads were always plowed up during farming, as the big house was in "Indian County".

Frank died September 9, 1945 after being seriously ill for several months. Louise had passed on February 13, 1944. Both are buried in the Hirt Plot at Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Ohio.
