Edward Hirt was the seventh child of Casper and Fannie Vogt Hirt. He was born in Riley Township, at the family homestead on SR 412. He completed commercial and civil engineering courses and graduated the head of his class at Ohio Northern University in 1888. On December 24, 1889 he married Carrie Black of Ada, Ohio. They had four children Gretta Ethel (Christy), Vincent (died at the age of 2), Verena Meloda (Wisbon), and Robert. Ed was secretary treasurer of Swint – Reineck Company and a leader in business, civic, church and fraternal life for more than a quarter of a century.
Ed was treasurer of the Methodist church for more than 25 years and was a faithful and devoted member of the church. He was director of the Chamber of Commerce; trustee of the Memorial Hospital and director of Oakwood Cemetery. He was a member of the Exchange Club and charter member of the Rotary Club. At one time he was the deputy county auditor under his brother Sam Hirt. Fraternal affiliations were many: exalted ruler of the Elks, 32nd degree Mason belonging to York and Scottish Rite and Zenobia Temple Shrine of Toledo, Ohio.
A man of quiet tastes, Edward Hirt was unassuming and did his many duties with efficiency. He was loyal to his friends, devoted to his family and an excutive and workman whose dependability and reliability were widely known.
Edward died unexpectedly May 7, 1933 following a heart attack at his home 315 S. Arch Street. Carrie joined him July 17, 1942. Both are buried on the Hirt plot in Oakwood Cemetery.
